An Interview with the Batgirl of the SDCC panels
There were lots of stories that came out of SDCC this year, but the one that has caught the attention of the comics community was a woman who dressed up as Batgirl to ask questions about female characters and creators at several DC Comics’ panels. I first became aware of her questions while following the live feeds of Newsarama and CBR. If you read this blog you know I have many of the same concerns she has. After seeing the reaction of some attendees and reporters about how her questions and those of others regarding female characters and creators were being handled, I compiled a post of that coverage. That post has now become the most viewed ever for this blog. Her appearances at the panels has also generated other blog posts and many comments. She’s been called everything from a hero to a bully. But now for the first time we can hear from her.
Yesterday I caught up with Kyrax2, the “Batgirl woman” as she has become known, to find out more about what drove her to ask these questions and her thoughts on the reactions she received.
DC rebooted their universe in what is probably the most confusing reboot (some things have changed, others haven’t, we’ve given up on a coherent timeline!) which seeks to embrace a new ‘diversity’ comprised mostly of white dudes, some half naked hot chicks and one or two minorities who may or may not be the hot chicks. Very diverse ya see. And they’ve been so very *open* to fans complaints, concerns, and beliefs that the male readership is not in fact comprised of twelve year old boys and perhaps wants plot more than T&A, especially since they already have the internet, thank you. Do I think I am going to in anyway change DC’s mind? No. Clearly they don’t care. Which is fine because I am honestly more fond of Marvel’s line up, so I—as a relatively new comic reader will not be buying any DC comics.
If this somehow gets seen by comic creators (Marvel, you aren’t off the hook I want a Ms. Marvel centered comic and I want it yesterday. Spider-woman can come too). Do you know why the comic industry is failing while the Manga industry is selling like hotcakes? The Japanese appear to be under the impression that girls *don’t* have cooties. There’s also a distinct lack of involved and confusing backstories, but let’s face it. As long as you give us a chance to read around those fans will grow to love those. When I pick up a manga I never have to worry that it’s going to objectify me anymore than it’s going to objectify males. I know that I’m going to be enjoying a wide variety of interesting female and male characters and not a bunch of animated blow up sex dolls and some muscle bound assholes who got into the steroid bottle. (Further note: the percentage of women who find heavily muscled, hairy men sexy is low. Really low. Slim is sexy in guys too. This isn’t universal, I love slender guys and I’d climb Tom Hardy like a jungle gym, but if you want your male leads to be sexy get rid of the bulk, no one wants to bone the Hulk (except that one guy who’s into that. But he has the internet for his twisted perversions)). Japanese mangas? Slim, pretty boys. Even the shonen ones aren’t bulked up. Also? Also if you’re going to have kids in your comics learn to draw kids. I can’t. I can’t. Damian Wayne is not 10. Or 12. Or whatever age you’ve decided he is because we can have all the male Robins but more than one Batgirl is *too many chicks* (I’m done, I swear I’m done). It’s also true that Mangas don’t have the bad rep that comics do (and frankly, often deserve). But you can get past that. DC, DC Green Lantern bombed. You should have known he would. But the Marvel movies hit it, which means a lot more people who wouldn’t have read comics are going to give them a try. This is your chance. Give them something good to read. I, frightened a bit of the sheer amount of canon surrounding the Avengers picked up Young Avengers (partly because people on the internet who were like:BILLYTEDDYBILLYTEDDY). I like it. I like Billy/Teddy. I like Kate and all the others too. I like the plots. I like the art. In a similar idea I read Young Justice. A bit too many dicks on the dancefloor and the art wasn’t exactly ‘attractive’ but I liked it. It had fun with itself and its characters. But then DC ruined it. And set forth to fill me with impotent rage.
